21 May Bird Report – PENS Vogel Trail

The morning started out cool.  We circled the parking lot where several campers had set up for the night.  Here we heard the glorious song of the winter wren, who has a long and complicated story to tell. We got a good view of the dark eyed junco and a few others before heading to the Vogel trail up the mountain.  Once in the woods a warm breeze and the extra exertion of the climb had us tying our jackets around out waists partway through the morning. We were a group of 8 with many unwelcome black flies swarming  us.  Fortunately they were just annoying and not actually biting.  The black flies also attracted many birds who feed on insects including warblers. The stars of the morning were the black-throated green warbler, black-throated blue warbler, oven bird and hermit thrush.  Many of our participants are working to keep the songs of these birds in their memory to be able to identify them by sound.  Including a new member to our group.
