Birding in the rain

Bird Report: Sutton Village in the misty rain

Early risers such as Sutton market merchants might have seen a group of six cold and wet birders roaming the streets of Sutton this morning.  We were a smiling group, peering into trees with interest, inching close to people’s yards and trudging through schoolyards.  We peered through binoculars curious as to which birds were present and active this morning.

Some of the highlights were the coffee break at Molly’s and the pair of gray catbirds. The male catbird had his feathers all puffed out as he paraded for the female.  Then flew off leaving the female cold, wet and alone. We also saw many birds with their fledglings.  Given the weather it was a very pleasant outing.

We observed 17 species before our coffee break and 8 species after.  there was one species we were not able to identify.  it could have been a very wet yellow warbler, but also could have been a female scarlet tanager or a host of other possibilities.  We will never know!  See the lists below.

The next outing will be at the Abercorn Bird Day on July 9th.  I will guide a morning bird walk, and there will be other bird-themed activities throughout the day.  See the information on that day here:

Thanks to all the birders who came out to these activities.  You can now call yourselves ornithologists!
